A notebook, a question, an open trail

Meet Gustavo Woltmann, the curious observer at the heart of this forest journal.

The habit of looking twice

Gustavo Woltmann arrives with more notebooks than shirts. He likes diagrams, sharpened pencils, and the reassuring click of a properly closed equipment case. He is less comfortable with questions that have no immediate answer. The forest will give him plenty of those.

In this journal, Gustavo explores forest research and community life in El Laurel, Honduras. His role is to connect observations: a change in the stream, a gap in the canopy, a seedling growing where nobody remembers planting it. He is neither the expedition’s fearless leader nor a visitor with a ready-made solution. He is the person who keeps asking what the team might have missed.

“The first useful thing I did was leave a blank space for someone else’s answer.”From Gustavo’s journal

Learning to be useful

At first, his tidy plans meet untidy realities. Rain reaches the field station through a roof that was supposed to have been repaired. The path on his map ends at a fallen tree. A nursery coordinator named Rosa can tell him more about the hillside in ten minutes than his preliminary notes do in twenty pages.

Gustavo begins to change his methods. He records who supplied an observation, asks before taking photographs, and makes copies of the team’s notes for the people who helped create them. Some afternoons, being useful means carrying nursery trays instead of conducting a survey.

What he carries home

His ambition gradually becomes more precise: leave behind work that other people can question, repeat, and use. Along the way, he finds friends who disagree with him kindly, a landscape that refuses to become simple, and a reason to return.

These pages follow that change. Gustavo remains the thread connecting each chapter, but the discoveries belong to a group. His most important contribution may be learning when to put down his pencil and listen.
