The last meeting
Gustavo Woltmann laid out the final copies of the notes in the same room where Rosa had first redirected his itinerary. The pages held fewer conclusions than he had once imagined. They also held clearer questions, corrected maps, and a record of decisions made together.
Elena reviewed the uncertainties. Mateo checked the route descriptions. Tomás chose the schoolyard sketches that would stay with the nature club. Rosa asked about a nursery entry that still needed correction. Gustavo reached for his pencil.
“The notebook was coming home with me. The work belonged here as well.”From Gustavo’s journal
No grand ending
There was no announcement that the valley’s problems had been solved. The river questions remained open. Some seedlings would need more care. The camera study had taught the team as much about its limitations as about wildlife. Each piece of work had a next step, and some had a sensible stopping point.
Gustavo made sure nobody was depending on a promise he could not keep. Where the team could share records, it did. Where future work would require new resources or permissions, the notes said so plainly.
An open page
On the morning of departure, Rosa gave him an empty nursery label. “For the next thing you cannot identify,” she said. He tucked it into the notebook beside the original map, now crowded with corrections.
The road out was brighter than the road in. Gustavo watched the ridge appear between clouds and understood why he wanted to return. He had not finished learning the place. More importantly, he had begun to know people whose questions deserved time. At the back of the journal, he left several pages empty. They were not an ending. They were room for another season.
